In December of 1890, between 250 & 300 Lakota Sioux were hunted down and massacred by Colonel James W. Forsyth & the 7th Cavalry regiment of the US Army. After traveling 300 miles through the Dakota winter, Chief Bigfoot and his followers were traveling to the camp of Chief Redcloud for sanctuary, following the murder of Chief Sitting Bull. Surrounded by Forsyth and his men, Bigfoot and his followers were gunned down by 4 hotchkiss machine guns near Wounded Knee creek. More than 250 and up to 300 Lakota people were killed and 51 wounded. Twenty-five U.S. soldiers were killed and 39 were wounded (six of the wounded later died). Nineteen soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor specifically for Wounded Knee, and overall 31 for the campaign.
*In October of 2025, Secretary of War - Pete Hegseth - upheld the controversial medals awarded to the soliders.
Each year, a group of Lakota horse riders begin a 300 mile trek, from the grave of Sitting Bull, to Wounded Knee, to remember & honor the lives lost during the 1890 massacre.
